Jack Markell has ordered that all United States and Delaware flags at state facilities be flown at half-staff in honor of former Delaware Supreme Court Justice Maurice A. Hartnett III, who passed away Monday. Chief Justice Myron Steele has also ordered that flags at all of the state courthouses be lowered to half-staff. Justice Hartnett served on the state’s highest court from 1994-2000. He was vice chancellor of the Court of Chancery from 1976-94. He also served as a Rehoboth Beach commissioner, Kent County Levy Court attorney, Family Court master, chair of the State Tax Appeals Board and chair of the State of Delaware’s Uniform Law Commission. The flags will be flown at half-staff through Thursday. “Justice Hartnett was a great person and a dedicated public servant,” Markell said. “Justice Hartnett was well-respected in the legal community for his intellect, legal judgment and fairness. It is fitting that he capped his distinguished public career with a term on the State Supreme Court. My heart and prayers are with the entire Hartnett family.” |
