Markell Proclaims Lifeline Awareness Week

DOVER –  Gov. Jack Markell and the Delaware Public Service Commission want Delaware residents to “stay connected” and are reaching out to those who need phone service but can’t afford it. Because of that, Governor Markell has proclaimed September 14-20 as Lifeline and Link Up Assistance Week in Delaware.

Access to local emergency services and community resources is vital to all Delaware residents. For many, a local phone can be the difference between social connection and complete isolation.

“We want all of our citizens to have access to communication via telephone,” said Governor Markell. “Being isolated or socially disconnected is not a viable option in today’s society. I join with the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and the Delaware Public Service Commission in urging those who are eligible to seek this assistance from their telephone provider.”

“We’ve heard from a number of our residents who just can’t afford the full cost of a telephone,” said Arnetta McRae, Chair of the Delaware Public Service Commission.

“Delaware’s participation in this national awareness event is vital to helping those who may need it most. While it doesn’t pay the full cost, it does help by reducing it.”

Under the federal Lifeline program, telephone customers who participate or are eligible for certain public assistance programs are entitled to receive a basic telephone service discount of up to $10 per month. Link-Up provides a 50 percent reduction in the telephone service installation charge, up to a maximum of $30, for qualifying households that do not currently have telephone service.

"With Verizon’s enhanced 911 service and reliable network, it is as important as ever for Delawareans to be connected. The Lifeline program is a way to make sure that low -income residents are not denied that opportunity.   As one of Delaware's largest investors of capital, Verizon works hard every day to provide all our customer with access to the best communications network, with the most advanced capabilities,” said William R. Allan, President of Verizon Delaware.

To apply for Lifeline call the Department of Health and Social Services directly at 1-302-255-9659. You may also find information online at http://www22.verizon.com .

“Receiving Lifeline or Link-Up is not an excuse for non payment of your telephone bill,” said Joann Conaway, Vice Chair of the PSC. “It’s a means of partial assistance for those who need it most.”
