Markell proclaims September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

DOVER - Governor Jack Markell signed a proclamation declaring September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Delaware.

In the United States, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men.  It is the second leading cause of cancer death among men in those groups. Prostate cancer affects both those stricken with the disease and their families. In 2005, (the most recent year for which numbers are available), 185,895 men developed prostate cancer and 28,905 men died from prostate cancer.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month highlights the great medical advancements that have been made and reminds us there is still much work to be done. “By proclaiming September 2009 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, I believe that this is a chance not only to raise awareness but a chance to help save lives.” Governor Jack Markell said.
