Markell Helps Break Ground For Delaware Children’s Museum

WILMINGTON – Today, Gov. Jack Markell joined the state’s Congressional delegation, along with State and local officials, and museum staff and board members to break ground on the Delaware Children’s Museum.  The project will comprise of 37,000 square feet of total space, with 17,000 square feet of exhibits.  It is projected that approximately 135,000 individuals will visit the museum annually.

Children’s museums help to stimulate children’s minds and encourage learning through play, math, science, and technology-based “informal learning”.  Museums of this type are on the rise across the globe, with approximately 400 open worldwide.  The Delaware Children’s Museum will be the first of its kind in Delaware.

The success of the Delaware Children’s Museum is due to a grassroots group of MOMS (Mothers of the Museum), who have provided awareness and advocacy to the community – including e-mail newsletters and Facebook promotion.

“Not only will kids learn a lot here,” said Gov. Markell. “But they can also learn what a handful of dedicated people can do against the odds.”

The museum, which will offer seven educational exhibits, is scheduled to open April 24, 2010.
