Markell Speaks at 2nd Annual Summit on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Obesity Prevention

Joins Division of Health and Social Services in a Comprehensive Look toward a Healthier Delaware

DOVER – Gov. Jack Markell joined Public Health director Dr. Karyl Rattay, along with approximately 100 attendees at the 2nd Annual Summit on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Obesity Prevention.  The event was held today at Delaware Technical and Community College in Dover.

“Whenever we engage in healthy lifestyles – eating wisely, being physically active and keeping up with our recommend health screenings, we invest in our state’s health,” Markell said. ”The state benefits in reduced healthcare costs, but more importantly we as individuals profit from an improved quality of life.”

The summit provided an opportunity for the Delaware Partners to Promote Healthy Eating and Active Living to discuss their 5-year statewide comprehensive plan to address nutrition, physical activity, and obesity prevention.  Highlights of the plan include the areas of families and communities, schools, worksites, healthcare, social marketing and communications, environment and policy, and sustainability.

Other event participants included speaker Carolyn Dunn, who chairs the “Eat Smart Move More” Program for the State of North Carolina, and Dr. Devona Williams, a Delawarean with over 25 years experience in the fields of public policy, planning and public relations with the corporate, government, and non-profit sectors.
